A convoy of eight
Typically Help4Ukraine ambulance convoys are four or six, occasionally less but on this occasion we had more!
Led by Simon Reevell the convoy set off from the north of England, laden with medical aid and equipment bound for hospitals and medical units across Ukraine. More a train than a convoy as they set off, hosted by a local TV station and with the full support of a local school. The school now home to a Ukrainian refugee who escaped the war to settle, for now, with her Mother in the north of England.
The children were fully involved, writing letters to children they do not know. Letting them know the world cared about their plight and they had many friends across the UK and beyond. They also sent toys and gifts as part of the items loaded in the ambulances and even signed the vehicles and left messages of support. A true community effort.
The convoy took the ambulances to their handover point in Lviv. Far from the front line but still subject to Russian launched missiles, glide bombs and drone attacks. There the vehicles were handed over to our partners Save Kyiv.
The entire operation was coordinated back in the UK by one of the team, Mark Strong, who arranged all the paperwork and clearances required as well as identifying the hospitals and field medical units most in need. Mark is also responsible for validating every handover and ensuring every item donated makes its way to the final handover point and to the hospital in need.
After handover the team are extracted back to the UK.
All are volunteers, doing amazing work and without whom Help4Ukraine could not operate. For the people of Ukraine these vehicles and their load make a huge difference to their lives. Thank you.
